    FRIDAY BRING WHITE T-SHIRT FOR TIE DYING AND BEACH TOWEL FOR PICNIC

    MONDAY 3:00 Dismiss.  We will be working on our time capsules today.  After looking into the 1960, what about our lives today will be interesting in the future?  Time capsules will be labeled "Do not open until 2027!"
    TUESDAY 2:00 Dismiss. Yes Bus.  Yes ASC.  High Frequency Word Pizza Party!  No need to bring or buy lunch.  We will be celebrating Jackson's birthday which is next week!
    WEDNESDAY 1:30 Dismiss.  No Bus.  Yes ASC.

    FRIDAY 2:00 Dismiss. Yes Bus.  No ASC. Last Day of School.  Mrs. Clarke will prepare sack lunches that we will eat outside.  Please bring a beach towel/old towel to sit on. Also, for tie dying bring a white t-shirt with name written in permanent marker inside the collar. No need for notebooks or snack.  Book bags recommended.

    MONDAY Awards banquet at 5:30 and awards presentations at 6:30.  All awards are justly earned and there is no guarantee that every student will get an awards.  (But...shhh....everyone in kindergarten did this year.)  I hope to see you there to share a nice meal.  This is the last week leveled readers are coming home.  You may see a jump in the difficulty of your child's books since I have just completed assessments again.

    Phonics Skills - Review blends and digraphs
    Math Skills - Fluently add and subtract within 5, writing 11-19, making 11-19 on ten frames, and writing number sentences for 11-19 as 10 + ?
    Reading - We'll be discussing insects this week, in particular butterflies, ants, and bees.  We'll read some fiction and non-fiction about these insects and then determine what common characteristics insects have.

    MONDAY Leveled readers will go home today.  If your child does not yet know the high frequency words fluently, continue to practice for a few minutes each night.
    TUESDAY Art with Mrs. Jochem today!  Practice addition and subtraction fluency within 5.  If this is easy for your child, bump it up to 10 or even 15!
    WEDNESDAY We will be making time capsules with the Pringle cans we collected.  Discuss with your student what we should put in these time capsules.

    Math Skills - Fluently adding and subtracting within 5, solving story problems, and making teens with 10 and some ones.
    Reading - We'll be reading up on the life cycle of a chicken as we prepare for our eggs to hatch!

    MONDAY Dance with Miss Kimberly.  Only 2 more practices and then the performance for Grandparents' Day!  Sara Luthy and Nancy Mitchell will come in today to share the book The Cow in Patrick O'Shanahan's Kitchen and talk about the maple syrup product cycle.  The students saw Nancy tapping the maple trees around the school earlier this year.  There may even be some tasting involved...
    TUESDAY  Leveled readers are going home this week again.  I know our lives are getting busy, but please try to include reading these books in your nightly routine.  I will be doing assessments this week to make sure your student is at the right level and to track progress.
    WEDNESDAY Dance with Miss Kimberly.
    THURSDAY During wait times with your child (in the car, in line at the grocery story, waiting for the bus, etc.) remember to quiz her/him on addition and subtraction facts within 5.
    FRIDAY  Grandparents' Day!  Grandparents should meet us at the church.  Students will sit with their classes and grandparents should sit behind them.  After Mass, grandparents will join us in our classroom for snack and 3 rotations of the Daily Five.  Grandparents are welcome to come in and out of the classroom as they visit other grandchildren or stay the whole time.  Around 10:30 everyone will begin to move to the gym.  Students will sit with their classes until all of their performances are completed and then sit with their grandparents.  Grandparents should save seats for the family so that everyone can sit together. 

    Homework Week of April 20

    Please bring in 2 empty cans (soup can size 10-15 ounces) by next Monday.  We will be reusing them to make centerpieces for Grandparents' Day.

    If you have not returned the Dairy Survey sent home last Monday, please return this ASAP.  Your child was not able to participate in this class activity without this completed survey.

    If you have not returned the Parent Permission Slip for the Student Personal Safety Training, please return Monday.  Your child will not be able to participate in this class lesson without explicit permission.

    SPRING CHALLENGE Students will be working for a class pizza party by learning all 31 high frequency words.  Two have met the challenge already!


    MONDAY Leveled readers will not be sent home this week while we do some reorganization.  I have always let the students choose the books they bring home from their collection we have read, but I notice that most are choosing the easier books.  I'll be bumping them all a a level or two to create more challenge.  Dance with Miss Kimberly today.

    Reading/Writing Theme: Man Landing on the Moon 1969 - We'll read non-fiction books describing the Apollo 11 mission and parts of the spacecraft, historical fiction books written from the perspective of families watching the mission on their TVs at home, and participate in online simulations.

    MONDAY 23 Please bring in four items from home for our 3D museum (cone, cylinder, sphere, cube, rectangular prism, or pyramid).  Some objects may be a combination of shapes..  These items will be returned after our geometry unit.  Remember to read your leveled readers this week.

    TUESDAY 17 Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Today we will be learning about the Space Race.
    WEDNESDAY 18 We talked about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. back in January.  Today students will understand better the timeframe in which these events took place.
    THURSDAY 19 Have you heard of the Chicken Fat song?  Evidently JFK organized a nationwide physical fitness program in which students were to participate in daily calisthenics to this six minute song.  The song was written by Meredith Wilson, the composer of The Music Man and is quite lively.  It is also a hoot!  We are going to learn the exercises and open PE class with this for the next five days.  We will also view the YouTube original 1961 10-minute introductory video which explains the importance of physical fitness.  Ask your student about the Chicken Fat Song!

    TUESDAY 10 Art with Mrs. Jochem.  By the end of kindergarten students should know their addition and subtraction facts within 5.  We have emphasized the picture in their head rather than the number sentence using the vocabulary plus, minus, and equal.  Although we will get to those later.  Ask your student to do some of these simple problems in their daily lives.  You have 4 pieces of broccoli on your plate.  How many will you have after you eat 2 pieces?  We have 5 errands to run.  We just did one.  How many errands do we have left?
    WEDNESDAY 11 Spring Pictures.  We will say the Stations of the Cross at church with the whole school this afternoon.
    THURSDAY 12  I will be attending a planning meeting at BCES today.  We will have a substitute teacher.

    The questionnaire above will be sent home Friday, Feb. 27th.  Please help your child fill out this form about his/her favorites and return Monday.  We will be using our answers to compare our kindergarten experience to that of our grandparents.  We have received many lovely letters from grandparents describing their early elementary years.  I will begin sharing those with the students this week.

    MONDAY 2 - Turn in Kindergarten Questionnaire today.  Students will begin bringing home 3 just right leveled readers in a zip bag today.  Please keep them and read together throughout the week.   There will be a checklist of activities to do with the books in the bag to be signed by a parent.  Please return on Friday to be switched out on the following Monday. Today is Dr. Seuss' birthday.  This week we will read Green Eggs and Ham (1960), One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (1960), Hop on Pop (1963), Fox in Socks (1965), and The Foot Book (1968) and compare how the books are similar. 
    TUESDAY 3 - We plan to interview 3 grandparents, who went to kindergarten in the 1960s, to gather information to answer the question What was kindergarten like for our grandparents? We will be composing and writing questions today to ask during the interviews.
    WEDNESDAY 4 -  Today will be our first grandparent interview.
    THURSDAY 5 - We will be making green eggs and ham today! No need to bring snack.

We will be sharing collections and participating in Hundred themed activities all week.

    Decades Study! During March all the students in the school will be sharing a decades themed study to prepare for Curriculum Night on April 15th.  Kindergarten will be learning about the 1960s (art, literature, current events, science, etc.)  Because this is when many of our grandparents were in kindergarten, we would love to hear about their experiences.  We will be sending them letters later in the month and asking them to write us back, but we would also like to have some guest speakers.  Please share any ideas or contributions you may have to make this study meaningful for the students.

    • Wednesday, 7 - Tumbling - wear comfy clothing.  Make sure your student knows the 20 high frequency words we have introduced.  Over Christmas break it is easy to have those slip from their memory.  Practice a few a day and see if your student can remember the song we sing for each.
    • Thursday, 8 - Addition and subtraction at this point is all about the process and not at all about equations or number sentences. Students need to know their addition and subtractions facts to 5 by the end of the school year.  We would rather students get a picture in their head than memorize math facts.  Including simple math story problems in everyday discussions or trying to think of different combinations that come up with the same number are great ways for your child to practice this skill.

    We are going to begin sending home Paddington Bear to spend the night with students.  He has a book to explain his roots and a journal to record your adventures with him.  You may keep him a night or two.  We want to make sure to get through the first round rather quickly, as the students will be anxious to take him home.  On the second and third round you can be a little more leisure about getting hime back.  Be looking for his little back backpack.

Program.  Even if you don't use the pizza certificates, meeting this goal will benefit your child and send the message to them that reading is important.
    • Wednesday, 3 - We will have Art with Mrs. Jochem today.  This twice a month instruction is made possible by the SMS Learning Through the Arts Grant provided by Tracy Family Foundation.  We are very lucky to have Mrs. Jochem who lives in Quincy and has been our Art instructor for over 12 year.

    • Tuesday, 19 - We will be reviewing the names of the upper and lowercase letters.  You will find a new sheet in the PEACE Notebook this week.  The highlighted letters are the letters your child can name.  Please practice the letters your child is still learning.
    • Wednesday, 20 - We will be reviewing 2D shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and hexagon.  Look for items in your home that are these shapes.
    • Thursday, 21 -  How high can you count?  I will be giving the students a chance to show off their counting skills.  Our goal is for everyone to count to at least 20.
    • Friday, 22 - Show and Tell (AKA Sharing) Bring something to share in a bag we can't see through and be prepared to give 3 clues.  Classmates get 3 tries to guess.  If we don't guess,  you stumped us and then show what you have brought.  No Mass for Kindergarten this week.  We will start next Friday.
