Instructional Focus

Areas we have been focusing on:

Be Proactive - #1 of the 7 Habits.  This is a very broad habit and if we used this habit alone, we would be well on our way to being great leaders.  After reading the book, The Little Engine That Could, we talked about having a "can do" attitude.  When we try something new, we are going to try to remember, I think I can, I think I can...

Show and Name the Letters of the Alphabet - We are making some great progress on accomplishing our goal of learning all the names and sounds of the upper and lowercase letters by Halloween.  While we have explicitly been practicing Aa and Bb, we have been talking about all of the letters.  Next week we will be taking a look at our names and comparing the letters and patterns.

Naming Shapes - Shapes are all around us.  When we made our trains we noticed many things about the 2D shapes that we used.

I'm sorry I haven't had more pictures of the students engaged in activities.  We have been pretty busy and I always think of it just as we have cleaned up.  I'll try to do better next week!

Friday students will be bringing home their Math Journals.  Please take the time to look through them with your child.  Please sign the last page there is student work and return on Tuesday as we will be using them again.  Math Journals will go home for review every 3-4 weeks.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Genni invited  me to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and so the class helped me meet that challenge.  I will also be donating to the John Paul II Medical Research Center.  Thanks kids!

The Kindergarten Challenge

Today I assessed all of the students on their knowledge of the names of the uppercase letters.  In the PEACE notebooks you will find a sheet with highlighted letters.  Those are the letter names your child was able to demonstrate he/she knew.  The class as a whole is at 79%. (Total number of letter names known divided by the total possible.) Next I will assess lowercase letter names and then sounds.  I will keep these sheets in your child's notebook so that you know which letters your child needs to practice.

Remember, the goal is to know all of the names and sounds of the upper and lowercase letters by Halloween!

The sooner we learn the names and sounds of the letters, the sooner we can read and write!

The Year of the Journal

I know you are anxious to see the work your student is doing.  This seems to have become the Year of the Journal.  We have a writing journal, a math problem solving journal, and an ABC book.  In the next week or two we will begin taking home one journal a week on Friday for you to review.  Please sign the last page with work to show you have looked at the journal and return on Monday.  We will rotate journals that we bring home.

Weekly Homework Page

After just a few short days, we are beginning to settle into some routines.  This is really a delightful group of students with active imaginations and great enthusiasm.  They are all very good listeners and I am happy to report that Mrs. Obert complimented them on their behavior in the lunch room and set them up as an example for the older students.

We have all decided we want to be peacemakers!

We have been talking a lot about filling each other's buckets with good feelings.  We have also been taking about things that people who are peacemakers/peacebreakers do.  We are leading up to writing our own class rules and mission statement.  There is a lot of scaffolding going on here.

Shortly you will be receiving an email from Volunteer Spot.  I have indicated possible times to volunteer for the first semester.  If you are able, you may sign up at anytime.  If you need to, you can go in and change a sign up time.  Sometimes school activities come up and times need to be changed or added (field trips), but I will try to stay on top of that.

Don't forget to check out the weekly homework page along the top of this blog.  You will notice that

  • we will not be going to Mass until next week, August 29.
  • Friday is Sharing in a Bag. See the HW page for special instructions.
Remember to review the school dress code.  Sock must be worn with all shoes.  That mean no thong- type sandals.  Also sleeveless shirts are not permitted.

Back to School Night/Volunteering

Thank you all for attending Back to School Night!  Support of your child's classroom will make such a difference in their education.

Several of you asked about volunteering in the classroom.  As soon as I get a master schedule from the office I will enter the sign up sheet  on Volunteer Spot.  Next week you will get an invitation e-mail that will link you with a calendar and times that we need volunteers in the classroom.  You may sign up for one day at a time or weekly.  Remember there will be field trips and other special school events for you to participate in as well.  Make sure you have your Protecting God's Children class completed.

Note to Self: Before next year come up with a plan for Back to School Night so that students can come explore the classroom AND parents can hear a brief introduction from the teachers.  Please feel free to offer your suggestions!
